In October last year we were delighted to contribute to the creation of a new community wildflower meadow at Manor Crescent in Slyne.
Manor Crescent is part of Lancaster City Council’s grassland management strategy and is managed with a single cut and collect in late August. Read more about the Council’s grassland strategy.
In total we were able to donate 1,821 wildflower plug plants, grown by our own volunteers. These were all planted at Manor Crescent on 7th October 2024 by a fantastic group of local volunteers and the Lancaster City Council grounds team. We were lucky to have a sunny day, helping to make it a well-attended and jolly event.
As a charity, part of our remit is to support meadow creation and restoration in the local area, in addition to our core work at Hermitage Field. The use of a Lancaster City Council polytunnel and glasshouse space, the time donated by our volunteers, and support from the Forest of Bowland National Landscape Hay Time project and Lancaster City Council, have enabled us to grow wildflower plug plants which are cost effective to produce. The plugs are grown from locally harvested seed (hand collected and brush harvested), cuttings, root cuttings and division. It was a real pleasure to be able to donate a large quantity of plants to kickstart the Manor Crescent meadow creation.
